Tell us a bit more about you and where you’re from.
Daniel: I was born in Minnesota and I spend most of my time here, but Arizona is like a second home to me. For those outside the United States, that’s like saying I live in Norway but I also hang out in Italy.
What inspired your winning story? Why did that particular theme resonate with you?
Daniel: When Leanna mentioned the requirement of a magic trick, I thought of a magicians’ duel in place of a wizards’ duel, and how it could be a mock-adversarial act like dueling pianos.
When, and why, did you start writing?
Daniel: Back in the 2000s, I was a dilettante on the old Thought Café website that J. M. Heluk has mentioned. That’s where I first encountered her. During Covid, I picked it up again out of boredom, but I soon found myself taking it much more seriously.
